A1

Along with the my D&AD poster and piece that I am submitting to Lloyds TSB I have been working on a large illustration.
I added text to this to generate my concept behind the illustration across to the viewer, but also allowing it to be broad enough for the viewer to interpret. I used Century Gothic because of the roundness and clearness the typeface offers making it clearly eligible. However in a quick last minute tutorial it was suggested that I explore the possibility of using my own hand rendered text. This would complete the piece and link it too my own identity and unique style of working which has been developed throughout the project. It also moves away from the clinical approach that using Century Gothic brings to my illustration, making it look more scientific. Although science has been a huge influence on this project I didn't want my work to look like something that would be in a science magazine or another science related media. It is to appeal to my target market which is people looking to recreate general life, so it needs to be available for a wide audience to relate too.

HUNG

LLOYDS TSB FINAL PIECE

This is the final piece of artwork that I will be submitting into the LLoyds TSB Art of Nurture competition brief. I have created this illustration to represent the idea of growth, growth of a new revolution that my project has been based on, where future generations are produced by the desires of their parents, reflecting the idea of 'nurturing'. I have deliberately left this piece of work free from text as I feel it does not need the support from a quote. I also wanted the outcome to be more linked to piece of art work than another poster.

FINAL D&AD 'DON'T PANIC' POSTER

Earlier on throughout the brief I was looking at using hand imagery representing the idea of stopping or pushing against the coming, the introduction of a genetic Revolution. However this became to obvious, I feel that i have a strong enough concept behind my working that I don't need to make it so apparent.

By re-looking at my earlier development work, experimenting with shape and size I created this poster focusing on that. Throughout this brief I have always wanted to use the same work for all briefs keeping it generic. This is one of three similar pieces I created as outcomes for Negotiated Practice, Lloyds TSB Art of Nurture and this brief.

3D DEVELOPMENT

I have been continuing to make different sized dodecahedrons, but rather than build a structure with them, focusing on how DNA is structured, I want to place them in the environment. By placing them in the environment I will putting illustration in places other than the obvious, where it wouldn't normally be seen.
After experimenting with using them with a large A1 piece I think that the final outcomes are going to be portrayed much better as separate outcomes.

E.g Placing them in an environment that represents where babies are born, conceived or related too..'At a hospital'.. or 'Above a bed' and at other places such as family planning centers.

INTERACTIVE

Following the discussion in the tutorial I have been experimenting using the concept from my work that each of my 2D pentagons and hexagons represents a 'package' of selections and desires from individuals or couples that are planning to have a child. I have used these and cut them down into lots of little 'fragments' representing the individual traits, appearances and personalities that would be available.

Over the past week I have been giving my target market a selection of fragments, a glue stick, and an A5 sheet of paper, with a simple instruction sheet, asking them to assemble a selection of the fragments however they want to on the paper. I have made sure that no one has seen any examples or other peoples pieces as I want them to be completely unique.

FINAL TUTORIAL

In my final tutorial yesterday we mainly discussed the outcomes of my project, I am happy with the feedback I received and am confident that I have have some very strong concepts and ideas behind my working.
I have been urged to really push forward with the 3 Dimensional work that I plan to create in the last 10 days, but as well as this it was suggested that some kind of interactive element to my work would be nice, for the viewer to complete. As this project is all about self selection, designing future life to how you, the particular individual desires it would be great to actually get participation from my target market.
In the tutorial I had all my shapes spread out on the table, after explaining that each one represented a 'package' a selection of choices of different traits, features, personality's that had been specifically chosen, we came to the conclusion that it would be interesting to use these and allow the viewer to actually do this themselves.

Hopefully I will be able to make this possible within the time constraint's as the deadline is fast approaching, I am going to experiment with cutting the shapes into smaller pieces and getting my target market to assemble them to how they desire. It will be interesting to see the outcomes from different individuals/couples.

Apart from this I would really liked to have finished blogging for this project in time to get it printed as a book at www.blurb.com, but unfortunately I will be blogging right up until the evaluating stage so this would not have been possible anyway, however I will get it transferred into PDF in time for the hand in.

DIMENSIONS

From looking at nets I have been experimenting how 3 dimensional shape looks/works with 2 dimensional work. As well as creating a large 2D piece of my illustrated pentagons and hexagons, I would like to create the same kind of thing in 3D. Whether it be a separate piece or combined together.

By using my bedroom wall as a temporary prop I can see how they well they work together, although I have stuck them to the wall, I would like to see them suspended from the ceiling so they are hanging, allowing you to see a different perspective of them, when looking at them from different angles.

SEQUENCE/PATTERN

For one of my final pieces I want to use these shapes in some sort of sequence/or pattern so that they reflect the idea of selecting aspects what makes us human, flowing through into the human itself. I have got my inspiration right from the beginning of the project when I was looking at DNA patterns. It seems these early shapes and patterns have stuck in my mind, as they have dominated my working since.

TAGS

I came across this old packet of luggage labels, and decided they would be good to use as self promotional pieces, and be used as a businesses card. By placing one a design element of the brief, if my work was exhibited these would be available for the viewers to take, on recognition of liking my work. On the reverse are my contact details.

REVIEWING

This past week has been extremely productive for me and I have made alot of progression and development with this project. From exploring further and pushing ideas forward I have come up with more final outcomes. From looking at three dimensional shape I am going to create a structure/piece of 3D shapes that will be hung in accordance to replicate and represent DNA and the idea of growth and working together. The 3D shapes will be made up of my illustrations in the shape of polygons which are representing the idea of when able to design future human life, every creation will always be different from any other as everyones idealism's and image of perfection is unique. I will also be producing a large A1 or A0 piece of accompanying work, focusing on again the diversity of choice when creating a human being and the diversity and uniqueness that would be produced.

In my original learning agreement I was set on producing a poster campaign of around 6 different pieces however I will now be producing just one that I will enter for the D&AD 'Don't Panic' brief based on 'resistance'.

As well as this I will also be submitting some form of design into the LLoyds TSB Art of Nurture competition brief.

3D

As I have been focusing on shape, there was the possibility of looking at shape in 3 dimensions. I originally wanted to create the shapes that I was already using in 3D which are polygons and hexagons, but from research I have found that it is impossible to create these in 3D. However I have made some 3D dodecahedrons which are made up from 12 faces of polygons. By placing my illustrations on them I can make three dimensional objects representing a 'package' that you would create, each one being unique to our own individual desires when recreating life.

COLLAGE

POLYGONS

I have been focusing on the idea of using the same shape to illustrate that the outcome would always be a human being, but there will be never be any two that are the same as everyones idea of perfection, everyones desires are always going to be different. I have used the same imagery I have built up so far in each Polygon but making sure each one is unique and different
from any of the others reflecting that from all the 250,000 genes we can select from no one will ever pick the same sequence, keeping us individual.
